After US President Donald Trump took office, they decided to seek asylum in Canada. Their six American citizen children went with them. The Morales-Roblero family is not alone. In recent years, Canada has seen a rise in requests for asylum from mixed-nationality families with US-citizen children. The children's right to stay in Canada is based on the outcome of their parents' asylum cases. But many of the families will have their asylum claims denied. When this happens, mixed-nationality families have to make a painful choice — take their American children back to their home country or have them return to the United States, where they can continue their education and live in safer conditions.
