How Your Mindset Affects Your Results As a coach, you’re in the business of change. You help clients change the way they eat, move, and often, the way they think. Speaking of which: Do your clients THINK they can change? “Funny question, but as you get to know your clients, you may find that some believe they can fight off “how they really are” for a time but don’t feel they can deeply change for good. This is called having a fixed mindset. It sounds like this: ⺠“I’m never going to be one of those people who likes exercise.” ⺠“I’m just not a cook.” ⺠“I’ve always been a bad sleeper. I’m destined to struggle with this.” Not to sound like a cheesy motivational poster but, in order to change your life…
You have to BELIEVE you can change. That’s called having a “growth mindset.” People with a growth mindset see their aptitudes (or weaknesses) as skills they can develop (or allow to atrophy) through their own efforts (or lack thereof it). [Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset] People with a growth mindset also… 💪🏾 Tend to have higher rates of self-efficacy—or trust in their ability to get stuff done 💪🏿 Are more likely to be intrinsically motivated—as in, they feel the stuff they do is internally rewarding, without needing a “prize” or external validation 💪🏼 Better sustain progress over time (that’s a happy client) So developing a growth mindset is important. Here’s how to help a client—or yourself—do just that in 5 steps. 1. Become AWARE of your mindset. When you struggle with something, do you believe you can change and get better? Does this belief change depending on whether you are thinking about, say, your ability to manage your time versus your food choices? It’s common to have a growth mindset in some domains, and in other domains, have a fixed mindset. So first, just notice what kind of mindset you currently have. 2. Recall instances where you HAVE improved in the past. Recognizing your past successes will remind you that you’re capable of change, at least in general. 3. Recognize OTHER PEOPLE’S successes. Try to recall or seek out people in your life who have applied themselves with positive results. Finding examples can inspire you, as well as provide you with practical role models you can reach out to to ask for help. 4. Pick a challenge that you MIGHT fail at. Remind yourself that even if you fail, it’s an opportunity to learn. You can’t truly “fail” if you learn something. 5. When you DO inevitably fail, be KIND to yourself. Remind yourself that you’re learning, change takes time, and many people struggle to make new habits or break old ones. Speak to yourself as if you would speak to your bestie.
