Dear {NAME},In this week's bullets, we're talking about the importance of emotional regulation during moments of conflict. 1. Food For Thought The holidays can be full of moments when our hot buttons get pushed. Our default coping mechanisms in these situations are often maladaptive. For example, reacting with aggression in the heat of the moment—or avoiding addressing the issue at all, in the name of peace-keeping. So, what can we do? Creating space can be a savior during conflict. Pausing and taking a few mindful breaths before speaking, getting some fresh air, or requesting to ‘pause’ the conversation and return to it another time. When we take space, we can regulate the nervous system, process our emotions and get back in touch with the part of ourselves that wants to be connected to others. Used intentionally, it can help navigate and strengthen relationships and advance our personal growth. 2. Inspiring Quote "If you think you’re enlightened, spend a week with your family." — Ram Dass. 3. Free Science-Based Tool When Hot Buttons Get Pushed. This tool helps your client become more aware of their emotional triggers, as well as teaches them to take a pause between the impulse and their action. (Although described as a tool for group coaching, it can also be used in 1:1 sessions). [[Link]( 4. Book Recommendation The Emotionally Sensitive Person: Finding Peace When Emotions Overwhelm You by Karin D. Hall, PhD. This book shares tools for staying in the present moment, identifying emotional triggers, and experiencing uncomfortable emotions. A valuable read for anyone looking to improve skills in emotional expression. [[Link]( 5. A Question For Your Clients When discussing emotional triggers (or their 'hot buttons'), ask your client to pause and become of their reaction, specifically to the sensations and feelings in the body. This helps to develop interoception, the first step in identifying exactly what emotion we’re experiencing (also important for improving emotional regulation). I'm curious if you have tried-and-tested strategies for staying centered and mindful when dealing with intra-personal conflict. Hit reply and let me know.
