Every challenge brings its distinct nuances—different kinds of fear, complex types of joy and anger, from amusement and distance to bewilderment. Being able to label emotions is a learned skill, meaning it’s one of the core emotional intelligence facets you can help others develop. The better your clients can label their own and others’ experiences, the better they can address them, whether that’s with acceptance, acknowledgment, or action. It’s precisely where Gloria Willcox’ (1982) The Feeling Wheel comes in. You're probably familiar with it. But are you using it to its full potential? There are at least three ways to apply The Feeling Wheel, for more breakthrough moments with your clients: - Throughout the day, when you want to discuss the impact of events or triggers ("How did that party make you feel?") - As evening homework, to uncover daily patterns ("What emotions did you feel in the morning? And now?") - Over time, for insight into longer-term trends ("How have you been generally since the break-up, and what else have you felt?") Each concentric band of The Feeling Wheel helps your clients explore their emotions at different levels, with increasingly more specificity moving outward. As you already know, an ever-growing emotional vocabulary is fantastically empowering for those you help.
