Editor’s note: Originally published in 1962, this DIY outdoor Christmas display has been a reader favorite for decades. Over the years, we’ve received mail and emails asking for the patterns, so people could replace one figure or another. It popped up again this year when reader James Reske emailed a photo of the display he built in 1970, when his son (to whom he has now passed it on) was born. We thought you might like to see it, and maybe create your own family tradition. So we’ve pulled it out of the archives, dusted it off, added notes on some current tools you can use for the steps, and republished it here.
