Test your police jargon knowledge. January 16, 2023 | [View as webpage]( | Too many emails? [Update Subscription Preferences]( Dear Police1 Member, Gordon Graham here! My new cop days were 50 years ago and as I look back and ask "What was the best advice I got way back then that allowed me to be successful?" several things popped into my head. Here are the ones you have already heard – show up early, never be late, treat people with dignity and respect, keep yourself in shape, know your policies and procedures, take your [Daily Training Bulletins]( seriously, make yourself indispensable, and look sharp, act sharp and be sharp. But I will add this in as I think it is so important for your success. Know your community – and know it well! Everyone in the community you have sworn to protect and serve knows who the good people are – and who the troublemakers are. If you are going to be successful, you need to have this same knowledge. Talk to everyone, listen and I mean really listen to what they say, and take every opportunity to engage daily with your community members. One final thought – you will have good days and bad ones over your career. But if I had it all to do over again, I would do it again. I envy you – you have entered the greatest profession in the world and I wish you success in all you will do.
