🎧 Listen: COVID vaccine FAQ for cops. March 11, 2021 | [View as webpage]( [LE%20WEB%20Roll%20Call%20News-P1-Rebrand-620x120.png?w=620&format=jpg&quality=92]( [spacer.gif] [728x90_end_of_season%20(1)%20(1).jpg?w=620&format=jpg&quality=87]( [spacer.gif] Dear Police1 Member, One year ago today, the World Health Organization made an announcement we knew was coming but nonetheless feared hearing: COVID-19 was a pandemic. Overnight, life changed. LEOs suddenly found themselves on the COVID front line and expected to enforce new public health edicts such as stay-at-home orders and mask mandates, which caused contention early on. "We are not the mask police — nor do I intend to be the mask police," [Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes]( told a County Board of Supervisors in May. Police1’s first “State Your Case” column addressed whether [an officer should have arrested a mom]( who refused to leave a playground that was closed due to COVID restrictions. COVID’s toll on law enforcement has not just been operational. In its 2020 officer fatality report, the [National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund]( reported 145 COVID-19 related LODDs, with the anticipation of many more to be added to that number. Both [ODMP]( and the [FOP]( have maintained COVID memorial pages. It is heartbreaking to look at the faces of those men and women whose lives were cut short by this relentless virus, leaving behind devastated families and bereft colleagues. In today’s newsletter, we focus on how to move forward on this somber anniversary: ► Listen to Dr. John Williams explain why cops should get the COVID vaccine ► Read Gordon Graham’s advice on how agencies can get officers back up to speed in a post-COVID world ► Implement some of the best practices learned over the past year for PDs to communicate virtually with communities. We also highlight a new initiative looking to collect your stories about LE life during COVID-19.
