And you may need to gain new skills and strategies to handle the workload you're being asked to carry. The same is true of our hamstrings. When they get sore—a nagging pain up top that shortens our stride, a susceptibility to cramping whenever we go fast or long, or, worse, a workout-stopping tear that leaves us limping—we usually blame the training load. And, granted, many of us do step up volume and intensity too fast when we set our sites on a race goal. But too often we find that while rest makes the hamstrings feel better temporarily, they quickly go back to being stressed and strained again as soon as we resume training. The problem is that the hamstring is being asked to do things it can't do well, and to do its job from unnatural and ineffective positions.
