But that equation comes at a cost: going longer and slower requires more time â time which we don't have, or don't feel we have. Whether true or not, we often feel we have to sneak in our miles between work demands and home commitments. This week, however, gives us a unique, once-a-year opportunity to add more miles to our schedule painlessly and without guilt. I woke this morning when the sky started to lighten, as usual, but it was an hour earlier than normal. An hour that no one had claims on and I had not yet filled with other tasks. An extra hour. Even after taking a bit more time to enjoy my morning coffee, I got in a couple of extra miles and arrived home in plenty of time for breakfast. Two more miles may not seem like much, but those extra miles will add up to a dozen more for the week if I keep up the habit. Yes, that free hour is paid back in the evening when I fall asleep not long after supper. But for my priorities now, losing an hour reading or watching TV is a small price for the chance to get fitter and become a better runner. And others are sleeping when I'm up in the morning, so I'm not stealing away from my social life either. The secret to reaping the benefits of this free hour is to not look at the clock, see how early it is, and resist that urge to fall asleep each evening. Stay up and you'll have to use the morning hour to get enough rest. It only takes a week or so to adapt and lose the ease of the early wakeup if you heed the clock instead of your body's signals. The irony is that we get this morning hour in a season where we don't need to get up early to beat the heat. Just the opposite in fact: weather-wise a noon run would usually be more pleasant this time of year. On the upside, we now get more light in the a.m. when we can use it, rather than in the afternoon when we're working.
