About his long, patient road back to full training after a tricky knee injury, about the concept of "cumulative load" (rather than isolated, intense workouts) that he is applying to his marathon training this year. But mostly about something he said about how he's approaching racing now: "Yes, I have knee problems still, and it is something I have to deal with every day," Stinson told me. "But at a certain point, I have to move on and approach my career like I am healthy and like I am the best version of myself." Can you be the best version of yourself and still be dealing with a nagging problem? It goes against my picture of myself, one in which the best version is free from all my wounds and weaknesses. One that puts together the perfect training program and executes the perfect race, the race I know I am capable of running. But that picture is fiction. "Perfection belongs to an imaginary world," psychotherapist Thomas Moore wrote in his Care of the Soul. "We are wounded simply by participating in life, by being children of Adam and Eve. To think that the proper or natural state is to be without wounds is an illusion." Stinson is right in not equating "healthy" with "injury-free." We are never entirely free from some weakness or imbalance or restriction from scar tissue grown over an old wound. We are always in some state of progress. Accepting this reality seems to lead to two truths: 1) Like Stinson, we can't wait for perfection to get into the arena (something I've been guilty of lately), and 2) we can't anticipate a time when we're not in maintenance mode, dealing with the imperfections of our real bodies. Stinson's comment dovetailed with something lifetime competitor Mike Fanelli told me when I interviewed him for my book, [Run Strong, Stay Hungry.](113/cy08X04/VX3-9x1qm918N8xRxKpdhc_gW3NdgT54yhYyfN4Pt_Nw3q3phV1-WJV7CgQPGW4wTdl-5JwL0MW8RTrXH1Z7TNVW8J171w4HlmnPW7J3LzT2cHKthW77cNhH7S9my1W8Z8Twc2xNSyBW2NSrXM9dx1jQW72FXdC87Mj3nW3_l7cB8Z4nkBM_h3PCwYK2SV1TPGf8g7FVKW1FZDGh5Jlc8zW8lTwH81r4GyKW3R-nQy35_PZgW4n7Ckj9057b-W18cCsS1s4Lm4W12ydwj6QHHcZW416CPv9k985TW5Cjpjz3zt7NxW34_lfn3fBYKhW1WQqWQ58NtnsN50kRzLHXgQSW68cqnQ5-lDVZW6N-tWH6YBpQPW2brlbP3lS0FMW8RH4gC7BW4y7W5fZ42-4YvdsWN7d3M0yYByf73g4H1) "One of the keys to longevity in the sport is to understand what you can and cannot do," Fanelli said. "Can you stay in a space of management and maintenance, and push as close to the edge of capacity in training, while working with whatever elements and pieces and parts of the puzzle that no longer work. You have to understand what you can do to maximize fitness while looking after the damage and trying to keep the damage from expanding." Stinson no doubt agrees. But the alternative is to walk away, and neither of them — nor I — am ready to do that. We have more to prove, more miles to enjoy. So we run on — eyes open in the imperfect real world, fully aware that we are damaged — with the mindset that today we can be the best version of ourselves. He didn't make it there. Instead, he spent eight months figuring out how to make his knee work right again, then another four coming back from surgery. A year later, and he's training harder than ever. Stinson and coach Dathan Ritzenhein detail his training strategy and workouts as he's pushed toward a comeback in Boston next Monday. Gone is the old myth that cartilage is static and only wears out. Studies show that it adapts to training load and gets stronger — even in the course of an ultra-marathon. We asked the researchers and some medical professionals what this means for running on arthritic joints. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
