Bewilderment. Relief. "Whew! I can't believe I survived that." His splits were familiar too, telling a story of an aggressive first half, then the wheels starting to wobble, miles getting slower and slower as he hung on, hoping the finish arrived before they came off altogether. Bekele set an audacious goal of [breaking the world record](113/cy08X04/VVJ9BP3rJPqRW4djwMW1Rw72jVSnzBh4y0Rj7N78Lwt35nCT_V3Zsc37CgSM_N2nNr1qcMSjfW1SBwpH4Mw7XwW2WbJ3y7X_1rcW32KGbh6LDcmLW35sv512kf493N9gnz8Sgp2kMN7GTh59MQ3XTW4Bmwyv8BHP2-VcBgcH7Qnv7kW8GkxZ77KdQ4cW81PL4n7N9R7pVTPXCn1k7VhfW27CkT36nS5v5W4t5DtQ2xq_4fW1Q3Vcw3c50B1W4KnNkZ66d5KGW74g0Zg79KvNrW5jxnLT7mXRDqW1ztCCW7Vm5J7MHVXwQ5Q9-cW35qsNR1mzL9fN97SJlKdD0DgW5tbQV612msMTW9j2JVn8FL2fKW4Vmh424RF33JW7sxZsz1ShFXRW46-T7m23LrQTW1120c215NgdSN1gH-PvC5D6RV-n7S272DcGTW1t5YQN5F01lmW6pMCZh2_VpLNN80SCF4Ygy6NW7CMdNg73XygJ3djY1) and stuck to his plan until he didn't. When the record slipped away, then the victory, he didn't drop out, but clawed onward to a third-place finish — far below his target, but something to take satisfaction from. We've all been there. In 28 starts at the distance, I've blown up more than two-thirds of the time. The reasons why are all different: this is a complex puzzle with not every variable in our control. But it is precisely that complexity and the very real chance of failure that makes it alluring. Those few times when I got it right are sweet because they are rare. They have meaning because of the many times I've stumbled past the finish line like Bekele, licking my wounds, taking pride in what was salvaged, and wondering exactly what went wrong — so that I can come back and do it better next time. "The beauty of Boston is dancing with the risk of failure, playing with the searing sense of your threshold," Peter Bromka writes in [his essay comparing racing Boston to roasting marshmallows](113/cy08X04/VVJ9BP3rJPqRW4djwMW1Rw72jVSnzBh4y0Rj7N78Lwt35nCT_V3Zsc37CgC88W6pc89X6S2_ptW8ZBR2H6d_L4WW4mtKts6mDyWCW4MrbXG1wm7V3W45PF4L6rM25yW6q6sm_8WM9qKW7hBMXk69dmQpW2ShMhw8Z-56LW5D40fk6MfGnZW8zwkTY51KCGzM_VlJTRQc4DVDnmM41q04RXV-3wNY3chMX1F3BSVvrzbmGW6BKyhv4f0K7mW3ynB4r96XXDgW6Xzh6g8QlKXnW8l02h47yNNGwW4wLtRP7JQj_NW3pFStr7FxYgQW1bphPb8Fjz8BW5N5rHP5vH6CSN9jTj8tb2_vvW4Gk--q247R5TN2jsBBfmc6djW5tblsw4YtHJRN1tcQ-0msw-fW1n6LSF5K07y4N8qzN3nq-vnDW2bdk_J8xvQyVN6BnLj1dxlYMW4WFxZP3pDy_ZN60DX7TLMZf4W8dwD1C6hPksV3fTX1). The satisfaction of a perfectly golden sugar puff isn't just the flavor — it stems from the difficulty of learning the art of applying just enough heat, which requires burning a few. There are lessons to be learned from Bekele's race, such as another example that [negative splits almost always produce the fastest result.](113/cy08X04/VVJ9BP3rJPqRW4djwMW1Rw72jVSnzBh4y0Rj7N78LwsN5nCTJV3Zsc37Cg-WBW3WL-VS8dwCXtW5M6lCl4kKVw1W2vJ2FX6HqZ4gW1fg3m63QFSY-W8MBPFY17FVFMW5DcKkj91t5dVW5p3ssH58QHtNW17VCSc9kF-2_VTC36f3TMzZ_VTFMYy2pM8k7W5RD0qr3kW8-4W9gBmPd5MjcqXW5rNmwM3YsywdW4RK4rr5JL-YvW7f9pg26z_9JyW3nwSfT2BsjF4VCDn952tCbKTVD42404NqSxzW3hW0Yg17nMMGW5fTRdN5c-93hW1zlBH-6lHZQ0W7Dwwrd4Bwm0xW2F2zPg4fwNjMW9dPxpD8Tv21FW4M1vwN3KqV4MW5l-pJG54XNSTN7N14j_6Sj5BMSkB24_LqxyW7RLgrp5hWknhW4cbPlF11rWhcW7r6l_b3ZFfWXW8tXrxR8LjQ_03n7f1) Bekele and other leaders' early splits weren't just fast, they were too fast — several seconds per kilometer under record pace — and they paid for it later on. But Bekele's run is also a refreshing reminder of why we're fascinated by the marathon, which continues to confound even the best runners in an age of super shoes, engineered fuel, high-tech training monitors, recovery devices, and the world's accumulated wisdom at our fingertips. It still provides a puzzle big enough to never be fully solved, and an opportunity to test our mind, body, and will like little else in life. You can't "bank" time; if you're running faster than your body is ready for, you're just taking loans that have to be repaid with interest — seconds faster early on compounding to minutes slower in the later miles. And not only is your overall time slower, but you suffer far more than when you're still running strong to the finish. Tempos — runs at or near your lactate threshold — are one of the most effective ways to train your body to sustain a faster pace over time, yet they are often defined poorly and applied confusingly. Coach and science writer Richard Lovett explains the research behind tempo runs, how to find your threshold, and a variety of effective tempo run workouts. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
