On the east side of the small Maine town I grew up in is a street that climbs sharply and steadily from the banks of the Penobscot river to the high school at the top of the town. The climb is about 600 yards, long enough to get you really sucking air, but short enough you can hit it as hard as you want and still gut it out through the top. As a budding young runner I soon learned to love that hill, whether it served as a way to test my early-season fitness, a confidence booster as I sensed my growing strength, or a way to drain away raging adolescent emotions as I poured myself into effort after effort on the way to peaceful exhaustion. A few miles south of my rural high-plains home today is a half-mile of rolling hills that gains elevation and incline with each new rise. It lures you in, the first rise hardly enough to raise your heart rate, then a brief recovery and a bigger climb that you fly over and pick up the pace. Suddenly you're halfway up the last long ascent and realize how hard you're working, but there's nothing left to do but finish it off strong and raise your arms in triumph before you turn around to head down and do it again. As soon as I start feeling strong in a season, I find a way to do "The Moguls" — and they never disappoint in drawing me in to greater effort than I've done to date and making me believe I'll reach my goals. But eventually I also learned to savor each hills' unique taste, the specific way each mixes the flavors of intensity, effort, pain, panic, persistence, suffering and success. Hills make you pay attention, they lure you to new heights, and they leave a lasting memory. We hate them. We love them. We love to hate them. I can describe in detail my favorite hill in every city and town I've lived in — from Denver to New York, Panama to Brussels — and I've never driven anywhere new without seeing a hill I'm tempted to jump out and run up.
