Still Speedy After All Those Years
One group of runners has even more reason to be excited about the turning of the decade than the rest of us. These are athletes who have run a sub-3 hour marathon in each of the past five consecutive decades. Imagine, finishing a marathon with a 2 in front of it in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s.
A few of them, who were teenagers the first time, are young and fit enough to believe they can add a 6th decade now that weâve entered the 20s. Given their record, who are we to doubt them?
What we can do is learn from them. I can think of few runners who know more about what works, consistently, over time, than this group. I interviewed a number of themâamong other lifetime competitorsâ when I wrote [Run Strong, Stay Hungry: 9 Keys to Staying in the Race]( two years ago. I discovered that while their advice was perhaps most appreciated by those seeking to maintain prowess and passion as they age, their training and racing principles applied to runners of any age, from learning to train by feel to accepting that race results are relative and growth is what leads to satisfaction.
This week, Amby Burfoot brings us a series of stories about some of the runners aiming for [6 decades of sub-3](. Burfoot, himself a lifetime competitor, asks them practical questions about training philosophy and key workoutsâand get a wide variety of interesting answers. Reading them, Iâve been struck by how hard these runners train, regardless of their age, coupled with the love that makes them want to keep doing it year after year, decade after decade.
Englishman Nick Sirs, 62, told Burfoot, âI run because it is such a natural thing to do. I enjoy being out in the open environment with sunlight on my face and some fresh air in my lungs. Why would I want to stop?â
Why indeed?
I hope you are as inspired and motivated as I have been by these runners, and I look forward to seeing many of them notch their 6th decade in the coming weeks.
