Oppo has [showcased a new kind of prototype item tracker]( that won't ever run out of power because it doesn't have a battery to swap out or charge. Why does it matter? The Zero-Power Tag was shown off by Oppo during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, and it promises to deal with one of the biggest issues that people have with item trackers - battery replacement. With the Zero-Power Tag, that simply isn't a concern. What's my take? Item trackers have proved useful since their emergence a few years back, but having to swap or recharge batteries has always been a pain - especially if you miss the alert that it's about to lose power. I've gone a month or two thinking my Tile tracker was still operational, only to find it was flat when I needed it most. Oppo claims to have found the answer - dispense of the battery altogether. Well, one that you have to swap or charge, that is. Its prototype uses "RF signal harvesting, backscattering, and low-power computing" to effectively harness the power emitted by radio waves to operate the device instead. It doesn't need much to keep going and it's an infinite source of energy, so shouldn't run flat. Of course, this is just a conceptual device for now, with no word yet on whether it will make it into the public domain. But, it's definitely something to keep an eye on for the future.  The Mac Pro's Apple silicon transition hasn't been forgotten APPLE What's happened? Apple's ultra-powerful Mac Pro is the one computer that it hasn't yet moved away from Intel chips and to in-house solutions, but the [company says that it still intends to do so](. Why does it matter? The rest of Apple's lineup has very much transitioned to Apple silicon, benefiting from improved power management, cooler running, and impressive performance as a result. But, the Mac Pro is still waiting for its time in the sun. Now, an interview with one of Apple's vice presidents suggests that the wait might soon be over. We just don't know when, exactly. What's my take? Come on Apple, get a wriggle on.  BMW iX5 Hydrogen initial review: Makes perfect sense in the right surroundings POCKET-LINT What's happened? Buying a car used to be a pretty simple process. It was generally a case of picking your preferred petrol or diesel model, working to your available budget, and getting for the best spec you could get for the money. But, with countless hybrids, plug-ins and fully electric cars to consider today, alongside those traditional petrol and diesel models, there’s almost too much choice. You can, for example, get the BMW X5 in petrol, diesel and plug-in flavours. And, now there’s a hydrogen model too - not that you can buy it, mind. It's still a concept at present. Our quick verdict The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is a great car to drive and performs in much the same way as its petrol, diesel or plug-in counterparts. Whether or not it will become a production reality remains to be seen, but it does show what could be done in countries that have a plan in place to create a hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
