CES - the Consumer Electronics Show - has an important slot in the annual calendar. It's the biggest of tech events, it has global significance, and it outlines what to expect from consumer technology in the following year. Why does it matter? But, more importantly, it gives us a reflection of the mood of all the industries that find themselves drawn into the world of consumer technology. Transcending the simple delineation of a single product category, it's [this barometer of tech]( that's more interesting than the products themselves. What's my take? The opening keynote for CES 2023 fell to BMW. It was a show that blew most others out of the water, with amazing staging, and cameo appearances from Herbie and KITT, alongside [BMW's new concept](. It also featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, who candidly claimed that his famous sci-fi film roles predicted the tech world we live in. And, of these, Total Recall really stands out. BMW's car offers to slip between reality and digital existences, while CES also showcased the PSVR2 and HTC Vive XR Elite, as virtual and mixed realities continue to grow. Ultimately, alternative realities were high on the agenda, with all tech pointing to its dominance in the future. You can see the [best of CES right here](, or you can read about [the most important announcements here](.  Samsung Galaxy S23 to launch 1 February, as next Unpacked leaked by, er, Samsung itself SAMSUNG What's happened? The next [Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event]( will reportedly take place on Wednesday 1 February 2023. Why does it matter? A teaser posting has been found on an official Samsung webpage that reveals the date of the event. It is expected that the Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra will all launch that day. What's my take? It seems the wait is almost over: the launch of the new Samsung flagship is one of the biggest smartphone events of the year, with Samsung one of the top brands in global phone shipments. The company hasn't officially said anything yet, but I'm guessing that with CES out of the way, it's a matter of days before we start to see the official [Galaxy S23]( teases start. It's time to get excited: 2023 is off and running, and there's so much to come.  Sony PlayStation VR2 initial review: Early playtime with the next-gen VR system in Horizon Call of the Mountain POCKET-LINT What's happened? Sony is returning to virtual reality with the PSVR2, a comprehensive rethinking of the VR headset originally launched for PlayStation 4 in 2016. With the next-gen headset coming 22 February 2023 and pre-orders already open, big changes are heading down the line. Previewed for the first time in public at CES 2023, we were there to put it through its paces. Our quick verdict The PSVR2 really feels like a next-gen moment for VR gaming. While we've only spent a short time in one of the launch titles, it's clear that the headset has the power to deliver an out-of-this-world experience for PS5 owners. It's an expensive system, however, and a solid pipeline of games will be needed to justify the outlay.
