Google will hold an event on 6 October where it is expected to announce full details on the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel Watch. Why does it matter? The company teased the three devices during its I/O developer conference back in May and has now [released a video showing off the Pixel 7 Pro's design in full](. What's my take? What possible reason could Google have for this strategy of showing off everything in advance of the official launch next week? That's simple - it knows that devices will leak, because everything does, so it's being open about the design instead. But, the biggest thing about Google launches is not the hardware, it's the software. Google is a software company and the biggest advancements it makes aren't in machining or manufacturing, it's in AI and ML (machine learning). When Google pulls the cover from this phone, the story is going to be about the advancements made to boost the experience through new ML models or AI elements - because that's the real magic here, not the materials that make up the [physical device](. Apple's Stage Manager will come to non-M1 devices APPLE What's happened? The latest beta for iPadOS 16 brings [Stage Manager support to some older tablets]( namely the iPad Pro 11-inch in all its models, and third-generation or newer iPad Pro 12.9-inch models. Why does it matter? The feature lets you multitask by housing groups of apps on the side of the display as you work, that you can swap to easily. What's my take? Apple often announces new features and then ties them to particular hardware. It's a great way of differentiating between generations of devices which can often be similar - while encouraging people to adopt new hardware. That was the case with Stage Manager, which was only available for M1 devices. I've seen lots of arguments for software-backed-by-hardware, but I've always been suspicious. One reason for this is the iPhone camera. We've often heard about camera advancements made possible by new hardware, when the feature is clearly software driven. I'm not saying that software doesn't need hardware to drive it, but one thing that Google's camera experience has shown is that often you can apply software solutions across devices regardless of the hardware used. [Stage Manager]( of course, is more complicated than applying an AI model to a photo, but it's great to see that the message has moved away from M1 hardware only and that others will get access to it.
