Get them to [sign up here.]( Apple launches iPhone 14 models, signalling a change of direction APPLE What's happened? Apple launched the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models yesterday during its Far Out event in Cupertino. Why does it matter? This new line-up of phones introduces a [wider gap]( between Apple's handset groups than with previous iPhone models - so there's more to consider. What's my take? There are a couple of big takeaways from Apple's launch. First, the iPhone 14 is joined by a larger sibling, [the iPhone 14 Plus](. This gives you Pro Max size, but sticks to the specs of the iPhone 14. That's an important point, because there are now more differences between the iPhone 14 models and [the iPhone 14 Pro](. The iPhone 14 sticks to 2021's A15 Bionic, while the 14 Pro moves to the A16 Bionic - so the cheaper phone now doesn't run on the same hardware as the Pro model. The Pro also introduces the Dynamic Island, Apple's solution to Notchgate. It takes that black area and makes it part of the UI, rather than just trying to hide it. It's an innovative solution, but again, it's only on the 14 Pro models and not the regular iPhone 14. So, despite offering a larger screen on the standard iPhone, Apple has given the Pro more power and some fancy new UI elements around that front notch - and that's before you get to the camera improvements that iPhone 14 Pro also offers. More than ever, the Pro now feels like a Pro, meaning that the decision about which model to buy will be harder than ever. Apple Watch Ultra leads a trio of updated Watch models for 2022 APPLE What's happened? Apple launched three new Watch models at its Far Out launch event - the [Apple Watch Series 8]( [Apple Watch SE]( and [Apple Watch Ultra](. Why does it matter? Apple has finally introduced an Apple Watch with a slightly different design - and aiming to be the best sports watch ever. What's my take? I've always found the Apple Watch a little boring. I love watches, but the uniformity of the design, worn on millions of wrists, always felt as though it lacked individuality. It was a smartwatch for the masses. That could change with the Apple Watch Ultra which, while still an Apple Watch, adds enough to the design to be interesting. It's a tougher device, with a titanium body, boosted with more pronounced controls and an additional button. The Watch Ultra also uses a flat display, protecting the edges with a titanium bezel, because it wants to be the ultimate action watch and challenge Garmin. It certainly looks the business, and lining itself up as a dive watch among other credentials, it looks like it's taking the fight seriously. As any Garmin owner will tell you however, it still only gives you 36 hours of use, compared to 18 days on a similar-spec Garmin. But I'm more interested in the Apple Watch Ultra than any previous model - so it has got something right. A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSOR The speed of sunlight: New Jackery Solar Generator 1000 Pro enables fast solar charging JACKERY Solar charging has been advertised as the technology of the future. And indeed, it’s currently one of the cleanest ways to get the power you need. But solar charging can also be quite slow. Or at least that used to be the case. The Apple iPhone 14 Pro sits alongside the iPhone 14, 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max in the company's 2022 lineup and offers some big changes compared to its predecessor. It also differs quite a lot from its standard sibling - the iPhone 14 - more so than in previous years. The main reason to buy the Pro in the past was its camera, but there's so much more to consider this year. Our quick verdict The Apple iPhone 14 Pro is, without a doubt, the most exciting of the new iPhone 14 models. It has a fresh design, camera upgrades, processor upgrades, and display improvements, plus the Dynamic Island feature is very cool. These upgrades and changes have set the iPhone 14 Pro up to be the Pro model it was always supposed to be.
