IFA 2022 saw the launch of a number of devices that finally make [flexible and folding displays make sense](. Why does it matter? The likes of LG Display have been showing concepts for flexible OLED panels for years - and finally we have a range of products that show how these panels can be effectively used. What's my take? We're all familiar with folding phones, but now manufacturers seem to be getting more serious about using these flexible panels in other areas. One of the highlights of IFA was the [LG OLED Flex](. This gaming monitor can move from flat to curved at the touch of a button, meaning you can have it flat for TV watching, or curved for more immersive gaming. That's a great use of flexible panels, but we've also seen Asus with the [Zenbook 17 Fold]( and Lenovo with the [ThinkPad X1 Fold]( (now in its second generation). Folding laptops might also move into the mainstream, giving you a lot more screen space when working on the move. While some of these things have been around for a while, the increasing number of options for devices that can flex, fold, or be used in different ways, makes me feel like these flexible panels finally make sense. Satellite communication: The next big thing in smartphones could be out of this world, literally ONEWEB What's happened? There's been increasing discussion about phones and satellites recently, fuelled by several strands of conversation. Why does it matter? Satellite communication could bring about the end of dead spots for smartphones and enable communications anywhere on the surface of the planet. What's my take? In the last newsletter a week ago, I reported on T-Mobile and SpaceX's plans to use satellites to achieve 100 per cent coverage for smartphones in the US. Since then, we've see rumours surfacing that Apple might introduce this technology in the iPhone 14, as well as confirmation from Google that it will supported in the next version of Android. We've gone from science fiction to "likely in place by 2023 or 2024", meaning that - if you can see the sky - you'll potentially be able to have smartphone connectivity no matter where you are. This could, quite literally, be a game changer for the smartphone industry. I've taken a look at [current situation with satellite communications right here](.
