T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert and Elon Musk have [announced Coverage Above and Beyond]( a plan to bring connectivity to the entirety of the US. Why does it matter? Using SpaceX's Starlink satellite system, a new network will be broadcast using T-Mobile's mid-band spectrum, allowing connectivity in even the remotest parts of the US. What's my take? Mobile phone signals currently rely on ground-based masts and equipment, meaning that when you get to remote regions - national parks, deserts, mountains - you might find there's no coverage at all, especially in areas with low or no population. Using [Starlink satellites]( you don't need the equipment on the ground, you can instead have your phone connect to the network coming from the sky - and T-Mobile says it will work with many existing handsets. Initially, it will offer text messaging, but in the future the aim is to expand it voice and data too. With Musk continuing to launch Starlink satellites, how long until more carriers are offering similar services around the whole globe? MyFitnessPal is no longer your pal MYFITNESSPAL What's happened? MyFitnessPal, the popular nutrition and fitness tracking app that millions of people use every day, is to make users pay for a feature that it's [long offered for free](. Why does it matter? Starting 1 October 2022, you will need to subscribe to MyFitnessPal Premium - the app's ad-free subscription tier - for $19.99 a month if you want to use the barcode scanner. What's my take? For a long time, MyFitnessPal offered a range of valuable features for free. It has always had a strong focus on nutrition, providing an easy way for you to track what you eat, integrate the results of exercise and get guidance on whether you're hitting calorie and nutrition targets. The best feature was the barcode scanner, as you could scan a packet and enter a product's information to the app, without manually inputting all the details. It was really easy to use. Now that's behind a paywall, the app will become redundant for many - and once you're paying for it, you have plenty of other options in the world of nutrition apps. DJI Avata review: The cinewhoop goes mainstream POCKET-LINT What's happened? To FPV drone hobbyists, the DJI Avata is a very familiar concept, but one that, until now, has yet to hit the mainstream. The FPV community calls this class of drone a cinewhoop, and it's designed to be able to fly closer to people and objects while reducing the risk of chopping things up with the propellers. Our quick verdict At its core, the DJI Avata is a specialised filmmaking tool that excels when it comes to flying in tight spaces and around people. It won't be the right drone for everyone, but for those who need it, it's a bit of a game changer. For casual users, it's a thrilling, albeit pricey, toy that's far less intimidating than the full-fat DJI FPV.
