It looks like Apple could be [working on a flurry of smart home devices]( that could include not only a new HomePod and HomePod mini, but a smart display too. Why does it matter? According to Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, Apple has "at least four new smart home devices in its labs", though he does add that "not all will see the light of the day." What's my take? Apple's march into the smart home has seen more than a few hiccups. A complex system with HomeKit that was slow to get started, and the launch of a speaker that, initially, wasn't very smart and was hugely expensive compared to the competition. Meanwhile, the likes of Amazon and Google have romped away, linking everything up and providing a multitude of speakers and smart displays at all sizes - and with affordable pricing. The advantage that those systems have is that they've moved quickly to support everything so you can choose which music streaming platform you want, which home security devices you want, and get everything to play nicely. We're really still waiting for that big Apple moment, where it steals the smart home market with a solution that's so much better than other devices out there - and an Apple smart display could be it. There's plenty to be done on the user interface of such devices and that's where Apple's real strength lies. Samsung may launch a foldable tablet alongside its Galaxy Tab S9 series POCKET-LINT What's happened? Rumours suggest that Samsung may have an [additional foldable device]( up its sleeve, this time in the form of a tablet. Why does it matter? Sources suggest this new model will be unveiled alongside Samsung's Galaxy Tab S9 series. What's my take? My big problem with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold has always been the size. While the Flip would get smaller and fit into your pocket easily, the Fold was phone sized and then got larger. I said when it first launched that it was more like the folding tablet that no one asked for. The idea of a folding tablet is interesting. It might allow you to move from that 10-inch slab into something that's more compact, with the advantage of folding to protect the display when it's shoved in a bag. That might make it appealing to anyone wanting entertainment on the move and I can see how it would appeal when travelling, or acting as a second display when working on the move. Allowing it to fold to avoid the risk of a cracked and scratched display certainly has appeal - but given the price premium on such devices, I can't imagine how expensive it might be.
