Get them to [sign up here.]( What in the world is going on with Google Meet and Google Duo? GOOGLE What's happened? Google announced in June that it was going to merge Meet and Duo. Specifically, it promised to bring the features of Meet into the Duo app. That process is [now underway]( and live for many users. Why does it matter? Unfortunately, Google isn't making this transition clear, because it's not getting rid of either app. Duo has been rebranded as Meet and will offer features from both apps, while Meet will remain Meet. What's my take? The graveyard of Google communication apps is littered with souls. For some reason, Google has struggled to nail down one approach and a single name for its approach to messaging and/or video calling. Worse still, once Google realised it had a confusing mess, it didn't really do anything to fix it. We've had Hangouts mixing it up with Allo, Duo, and Meet and Chat - and we all blame Google+ for that. We've also got Messages elsewhere rolling in features to rival Chat, which I believe is now actually part of Meet - and was being used like Duo. We all know that Duo will retire and we'll just have a product called Meet in the future, even if Meet is actually morphing into Duo. Confused? Aren't we all? Android's new trend is teasing software before the Android core is actually released ONEPLUS What's happened? OnePlus announced the [OnePlus 10T]( this week and took the time to talk about [OxygenOS 13]( at the same time. Why does it matter? You can't actually get OxygenOS 13 yet and it's not on the OnePlus 10T at launch. What's my take? Android updates are hot potatoes. Often pointed at by Apple during iOS presentations - accompanied by guffaws - the differing timeline of updates from Google through to all the manufacturers has always been a source of consternation. But, we're now seeing a growing trend in manufacturers talking about their new software before the core Android software that underpins it has even gone public. Sure, it's great to showcase new features, but in the case of OnePlus, I fear that this will lead to false hope: the new phone doesn't come with [Android 13]( or OxygenOS 13, it will come as an update in the future. And we all know how smooth that process is. Things have improved remarkably, however. Google used to save its version update to match a particular device launch (ie., Pixel phones), but in recent years Android has come out a month or two earlier - and some manufacturers like Samsung have really shown some aptitude in rolling these updates out. With the 8T a couple of years ago, OnePlus released a phone that was halfway between a flagship and a mid-ranger. For 2022, it's doing the same again with the 10T. It sits between the Nord 2T and the OnePlus 10 Pro, offering a poorer display than the flagship and adopting the build quality and camera system from the cheaper Nord 2T. Our quick verdict The OnePlus 10T is a great value phone for the money, offering high performance specifications, a great display and at least one good camera for a very reasonable price. You do have to compromise a little on some areas, but it still represents a very competitive phone for the cost.
