Amazon is holding its annual re:Mars conference about machine learning and AI, and has used the opportunity to talk about a piece of technology it's developing for its voice assistant Alexa. It demonstrated what it would be like if [Alexa could mimic voices]( so that its speech sounded like a relative. Why does it matter? The idea was presented by Alexa senior vice-president Rohit Prasad, alongside a short clip of a child being read to by Alexa in the voice of a recently-deceased grandparent. What's my take? The feelings around this sort of technology use are likely to be strong. On one hand, some might take great comfort in hearing the voice of someone they have lost. On the other, it might be traumatising to have the voice speak to you from beyond the grave. A huge part of this will come down to how people deal with grief and how they cope with loss. At its heart, this is about technology synthesising a familiar human voice using AI, and the mind boggles how this might be used: changing Alexa's voice to a parent's for fun; making the satnav sound like your nagging partner; changing the voice of your domestic assistant robot to your ex; giving that deep fake video an authentic voice; making those spam calls sound like someone you know so you're more likely to fall for it. Mimicking the voice of a dead grandparent is just the tip of the creepy iceberg. The amazing electric cars of Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022 Pocket-lint What's happened? Goodwood Festival is Speed is held annually in the grounds of the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex, UK. It attracts thousands to show off their cars, get a closer look at cars they've only ever dreamed of owning, or just to soak up the festival atmosphere. Why does it matter? While much of the show is about nostalgia, with ranks and ranks of historical and rare cars, many of the stands are dedicated to [electric vehicles](. What's my take? There's a strange duality to Goodwood. Many people line the famous hillclimb road to live and breathe the accomplished cars that scream past, with popping exhausts and roaring V8s (or even W16s), while behind them, the show is dominated by electric cars. Central to the stands is Electric Avenue, where just about all the current (and some of the future) electric cars are shown off - and it was absolutely packed with people. Then you have some much rarer models, like the Hispano Suiza Carmen above, or the Mustang by Charge Cars, based on a classic 67 Fastback body design. Goodwood is a celebration of what has been achieved with combustion engines, but slowly it's the electric hypercars that are turning heads and pulling in the fans. Rimic Nevera? Check. Lotus Evija? Check. Lucid Air? Check. There's plenty for EV fans to see. - [Check out all the amazing electric cars from Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022]( Valve Steam Deck review: Perfect for playing away Pocket-lint What's happened?
