Apple held its annual developer conference, WWDC, yesterday at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Why does it matter? The event was a chance for Apple to reconnect with press and developers in person, as well as showcase its software efforts for the rest of the year. There was also the small matter of a new M2 MacBook Air. What's my take? Running for almost two hours, the presentation featured a lot to take in. There were new features and announcements across the various operating systems Apple offers. Not all platforms got equal attention though - some were left out entirely (such as tvOS). Here are my thoughts on the big announcements that did make the cut and what they'll mean for you in the coming months and beyond. iOS 16 This took up the lion's share of the presentation by far, and there was a lot to take in. The new Lock Screen changes are likely to have the biggest visual impact, as the iPhone will offer a similar experience to the Watch Faces on the Apple Watch. Perhaps the new feature I will benefit from most though, is being able to fix typos in Messages. There's also the new iCloud Share Photo Library which is effectively a shared iCloud album between you and five others. - [Apple previews iOS 16, big changes coming]( Apple Pay Later This looks really interesting. New to Apple Pay, it will allow you to spread the payments of whatever you are buying over four, zero fee payments with no interest. It's a similar offering to alternatives from other services and retailers, such as Klarna, PayPal and Amazon, but making it simple to use on an iPhone could prove huge business for Apple. - [Apple Pay Later allows you to split a purchase into four payments with no fees]( watchOS 9 Not a huge amount here, but I love that Apple is finally adding heart rate zones and interval training options to the running app. It was also telling that after the “here’s some new watch faces" comments (the new Metropolitan face looks lovely), the rest of the watchOS 9 segment focused pretty much entirely on health and fitness. I don't think Apple even mentioned Watch apps once. - [Apple debuts WatchOS 9 with health features like sleep stage and medications]( iPadOS 16 Another attempt to improve multitasking on the iPad was the main order of the day. From what I saw detailed in the presentation, it still looks really confusing and I’m not sure Stage Manager on an iPad screen is the answer. Am looking forward to be proven wrong once we get to play with the feature - hopefully in the public beta in July. - [iPadOS 16 teased during WWDC with a swathe of new features]( macOS Ventura There were definitely some interesting features here too, like being able to use your iPhone camera as a webcam. As with iPadOS 16, Stage Manager is coming to Mac too. It offers the same multitasking approach to make things easier to find and use, but looks better suited to a laptop or desktop screen, perhaps. - [macOS Ventura coming with Stage Manager and other enhancements for Mac]( Apple M2 The Apple Silicon processor cycle starts again. This time we’re getting a faster processor that will be better than the M1, but not better than the M1 Pro. Turns out the four processors Apple offers for its Mac and iPad ranges are in four distinct lines; M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra, with the M2 coming to replace the former. Does that mean we should expect M2 versions of the rest too? Probably. Apple MacBook Air Sporting the new M2 chip, the new MacBook Air looks really nice and is extremely light. The midnight colour, which has a blue shine to it, will be the one to get. - [MacBook Air initial review]( Apple CarPlay Apple teased plans to take over your entire in-car infotainment system and control everything, including your dashboard. It looks very smart but we won’t see it until late 2023, so don’t get too excited just yet. - [Apple Carplay getting a major overhaul, wants to run your entire in-car experience]( tvOS Didn't get a mention. Apple AR Glasses Didn’t happen, so the wait continues,. However, I found it telling that many of the announcements and reveals could be linked back to AR experiences. Whether that’s enhanced dictation, better photo features, or just the general use of the phrase “machine learning” at every opportunity during the event, it made me think we’re now in a “when” rather than “if” situation for Apple's AR efforts. Stay tuned. Wahoo Kickr Core review: Hitting the turbo trainer sweet spot Pocket-lint What's happened? With the company's Kickr Snap already offering a solid entry-level option, Wahoo decided that it needed a mid-level trainer to complete the line-up. Our quick verdict It's hard to find fault with Wahoo's mid-tier turbo trainer. Sure, it doesn't quite have all the bells and whistles of the top of the range model, but, for most indoor riders, this is right in the sweet spot of functionality and price. It delivers on all of its promises: it's accurate, built to last and is backed by Wahoo's customer service.
