Google has announced a bevy of new hardware at its Google I/O event including new phones, a new smartwatch, headphones, and the tease of a new tablet. Why does it matter? Many were expecting a focus on software with a smattering of hardware announcements, but perhaps not as many as we've got, and certainly not including teases for products as far out as 2023. What's my take? I detailed yesterday how we thought that this years' Google I/O was expected to deliver some hardware, but I have to admit even I wasn't expecting the amount of announcements we saw from the company. What's interesting is Google's approach to try and get ahead of the rumour cycle, with confirmation of the [Pixel 7]( and [Pixel Watch]( later this year, a [Pixel tablet]( expected in 2023, and even a demo of some very cool looking Google Translate AR glasses. Combine that with some more nearer releases for devices like the [Pixel 6a]( there's a lot to take in. But by announcing now and releasing later, does Google threaten to make the exciting merely expected when the new devices finally get into consumers hands? Time will tell. - [Google I/O 2022 recap: All the biggest announcements]( Nintendo admits that its next console generation is a "major concern" Pocket-lint What's happened? During an investor Q&A in Japan this week, Nintendo apparently [admitted]( that transitioning to a new generation of consoles when the Switch has run its course remains "a major concern". Why does it matter? The aim on Nintendo's side is seemingly to ensure that users don't just feel tied to a single bit of hardware, but are incentivised to stick with Nintendo as a brand when it drops new tech. What's my take? The Nintendo Switch has been hugely popular, more so than the PlayStation and Xbox in recent years, but ensuring that success continues is clearly the biggest challenge the company faces over the next decade. How you do you persuade people to buy the next big thing when the last big thing is still good, and still enjoyed? And if that challenge wasn't enough, add in a history where you went from the Wii to the Wii U, and you can see why Nintendo would be nervous. No pressure then!
