Is your pain learned? It makes so much sense, yet nobody talks about it or considers it... Imagine practicing piano every single day, 3 months straight, for hours a day... Whether youâd like it or not, youâd probably be pretty darn good at it, eh?! Same thing occurs with pain⦠How long have you been in pain? If itâs more than just a few months (Iâve seen it occur in folks who have had it for only a few weeks), then consider that with each and every pain experience, youâre conditioning your brain to feel pain- youâre literally teaching it to feel pain when doing certain things. For Churchill- he trained his brain to experience pain with sitting. We call this a conditioned response. Churchill thought his back and leg pains (sciatica type stuff) was due to pressure placed on his discs when sitting⦠After putting together the pieces of his pain puzzle- we discovered that he had actually just trained himself (learned) to experience pain with sitting. For Churchill... sitting = pain = bad. Every time he sat, he would feel pain, and he would run from it! This just reinforced that sitting = pain = bad. The solution? We helped him build evidence to prove (to himself) that his pain was no longer coming from the discs of his lower back⦠but instead, was simply a learned response. Then, we gave him some techniques while sitting to reprogram his brain and help him unlearn this response. We taught him how to unlearn pain. Weird. Now, what are some signs your pain might be learned? - No clear injury/cause of pain
- Pain >3 months
- Doctors canât agree upon a clear diagnosis/cause
- Symptoms seem to move/shift around
- You have some âgoodâ days and âbadâ days
- Youâve got a high pressure, perfectionist, people-pleaser personality So, is it possible that at least some (or all) of the pain you experience is learned⦠and that you simply need to unlearn it (like Churchill)? By the way, all pain is REAL (youâre NOT crazy, itâs not made up, and itâs not âin your headâ)...
