[Quick tip]( Hey — It's Brett. Here’s a little tip from our new [Getting Off Auto Mode]( eBook. The Importance of Control in Translating Your Vision Photography always starts with vision. Whether you’re capturing a spontaneous moment or conceptualizing an idea that you plan to set up, that vision in your mind is your basis for creating an image. Vision is our basis of getting off Auto - to be able to use your camera to recreate an image in such a way that it looks as close to what was originally in your mind as possible. And the best way to do that is to have control over the factors that affect image creation. Here's an example: I wanted to create a quick image of a mason jar and I wanted the background to be either dark or to have even minimal lighting I attempted to create this vision using Auto on my DSLR. As you can see in this image on the left - it was a failure. That’s because I had very little control. All I could do was direct how the image was framed. The camera decided most of what happened. Since it found the scene too dark, it fired the onboard flash and it lit up the shot pretty badly. This wasn’t the image I had in mind. But when I used Manual mode on my camera, I had more control because I could now tell the camera how I wanted the image to look. I definitely had a say as to whether the flash would fire or not. In this case, I didn’t want it to. On the right is a quick shot I took using Manual mode. This is much closer to my original intention. –– Ready to get off auto mode, and bring your creative visions to life?
