Hey photographers, let's talk about this... [Home]( How much background blur is too much when photographing? Grab the [Background Blur guide]( today to learn the secrets to creating gorgeous, blurry-background images (but read the tips below first!). –– While background blur can be beautiful, there is such a thing as too much blur. You always want to consider the amount of detail you want in your background even as you achieve background blur because blur reduces detail. In some cases, you would want everything in your background to be totally unrecognizable either because it’s irrelevant to the message of the shot or to be able to reduce distractions. In other cases, you would still want some detail to show so that it works well with the story you’re trying to convey. Take a look at the following images. In the image above, you can still recognize that the background is of a beverage fridge. This detail is essential to the story. The blur is enough to emphasize that the focus is on the woman. If the photographer blurred out the background a bit more, making the fridge unrecognizable, it may have been less effective. [📷 Want the secrets to creating beautiful background blur? We can only guess what the background could be – possibly foliage, but it can also be something else. If you want more background detail, you would want to lessen the distance between the subject and the background, widen the depth of field instead, or both. These strategies will work to a certain extent. When photographing, ask yourself these questions: does my photo need more background blur? Will more blur help emphasize the main subject in the photo, or will important background detail be lost due to it? These are decisions you need to make as you consider using background blur.
