Hey photographers, let's talk about this... [Home]( 💡🐛 How Reflected Light Affects Color in Macro Photography Grab the [Essential Guide to Macro Lighting]( today to learn and master the exact skills for mind-blowing macro photography (but read the tips below first!). –– Understanding the connection between light and color is an important key to getting great macro images. With an understanding of how light and color interact, you can create mood, depth, and points of interest in your photographs. The apparent darkness and lightness of colors in your images can lead a viewer through your image to your subject. You can utilize color temperatures to make your viewer feel happy, sad, excited, and calm. And let’s face it: bright, vibrant colors grab our attention. An important consideration when doing macro photography is to be aware of reflected color. When light bounces off an object, it can take the color qualities of that object with it. If you have ever had to edit a too-red face because of light reflected from a shirt or nearby object, then you know exactly what we are talking about. The color can be reflected onto nearby objects and, in turn, change the way the subject appears as you can see in the image below where the bee appears red on its lower body because of the red light reflected from the flower petals. Macro photographers that shoot insects and plants will run into this a lot. Sometimes you can set your white balance to adjust for this. If that does not do the trick, then changes might be necessary in post-production – which is why shooting RAW is important. The relationship between light and color is not one to be overlooked by macro photographers. The more you photograph macros, the more you’re going to get better at understanding this beautiful interaction between light and color.
