There were several types of film that really stood out for professional use (outside of portraiture). One was from Kodak, and it was called “Kodachrome”. The other was from Fuji Film, and it was called “Velvia”. In those days, a photographer didn’t have post-production duties. How an image would be captured and transferred to a final result was determined through the choice of film, the lighting at the time of exposure, the photographer’s skill at getting the exposure correct, and, finally, how the film would be processed. In a way, we are really lucky today, because post-production allows us a much greater degree of control over the our final result. However, here is the downside: Digital cameras, currently, cannot directly create an image that displays the range of color, contrast, and tone that film could. Digital images must be ‘helped along’ to look their best! That is the definition of fundamental editing: to take a raw (pun intended) image and finesse it into an award-winning final product. It is not about creative effects. That is an entirely different genre of digital editing. So, what are the steps that must be addressed in fundamental editing? - Properly opening the digital image file - Crop - Noise reduction - Global exposure adjustment - Setting the black point on the shadow end of the histogram - Setting the white point on the highlight end of the histogram - Color temperature - Color tint - Clarity - Vibrance - Color saturation - Efex - Vignette - Efex - Dehaze - Localized exposure & sharpening - Global sharpening These are the steps that are missing from a camera raw digital file. It puts life back into your images! If you’d like to learn exactly how to make your digital images shine– Go here now and grab “[The Ultimate Guide to Fundamental Editing]( for step-by-step instruction on each of those steps above.
