This week we're excited to feature Winogrand Color: a breathtaking, well-edited compilation of Garry Winogrand's important color work! [View this email in your browser]( [photo-eye] PHOTOBOOK WEEKLY September 9, 2023 NEW ARRIVAL --------------------------------------------------------------- Journey West Danny Lyon This book is a companion volume to the exhibition Journey West: Danny Lyon. The exhibition was on view at Albuquerque Museum, March 11 – August 27, 2023. The story of Lyon’s move from New York to the West, his lifetime of work in a small New Mexican town, his involvement with the border, immigration, climate disaster and the landscape of the great American desert. [Order Journey West or read more]( BESTSELLER --------------------------------------------------------------- Winogrand Color Garry Winogrand Known for his spontaneously made, incredibly energetic, black-and-white street photography, Garry Winogrand was one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. What is lesser known is that Winogrand also took more than 45,000 color slides over a period of nearly two decades, as he rarely printed them. *Winogrand Color is due to ship November 2023. However, the resulting book Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club is not a study of UFO sightings but instead uses the phenomena as a starting point to explore the people, landscape and folklore of the town. [Pre-Order Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club or read more]( Pictures from the Outside Chantal Zakari Zakari asked thirteen incarcerated men if they would like to have a photograph of a place from the outside. She asked for specific instructions on how to make the pictures. The men drew diagrams, maps and wrote descriptions based on their memories of the place. She then traveled to each location and made the photographs. The requests were of childhood homes, high schools, locations of happiness and sadness, courthouses and places where their lives were irreversibly altered. Upon her return with the photographs, participants responded with a piece of writing that vary from childhood memory to epic fantasy. [Pre-Order Pictures from the Outside or read more]( Photography and Korea Jeehey Kim Photography and Korea is the first history of Korean photography for a Western readership. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, when Korean travelers brought photographic technology home from China, Photography and Korea presents multiple visions of the country, Korean diasporas, important Korean artists, and local photographers. The book also addresses studio and institutional practices during the Japanese colonial period, how photography connects with Korean political and cultural history, and the divergence of practices after the division of Korea. "In conversations about contemporary Native American photographers, Wendy Red Star, an Apsáalooke multimedia artist, is often among the first referenced. I must admit that, until now, I have overlooked her practice and her layers of contribution to the fields of art history, oral history, archival studies, and remix studies, among others. Having spent time with her artist’s book Bíilukaa, I understand her to be an intellectual visual scholar with a commitment to visual sovereignty — to revitalizing the collective ability of Indigenous people to exercise creative tribal autonomy and self-determination. In Bíilukaa she demonstrates this in meaningful and productive ways using Native art, histories from the archive, and deeply personal family memories..." — Marcella Ernest [Read the full review]( [Order Signed copies of Bíilukaa]( ARRIVING SOON --------------------------------------------------------------- Please Please Return Polaroid Miles Aldridge The sequel to Miles Aldridge’s Please Return Polaroid (2016), this book presents new and vintage Polaroids from the British photographer’s more than 20-year archive, in a seemingly random sequence shaped by a dreamlike logic and surprising juxtapositions. Please Please Return Polaroid explores Aldridge’s dedication to analogue processes where cut-and-paste is still a manual process, made with scissors, gaffer tape, intuition and not a little patience.
