Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Online After hitting a wall with Hollywood studios, director Ava DuVernay turned to philanthropy to fund an adaptation of an influential book on racial and ethnic persecution. DuVernay’s film, “Origin,” is based on the 2020 best-seller “Caste,” which spans eras and countries, and which many readers thought unadaptable to film. Although it swims against the current tide of superhero movies, the Ford Foundation, Lauren Powell Jobs, Melinda French Gates, NBA stars, and others stepped in to provide most of the film’s $38 million budget. The Ford Foundation’s Darren Walker called the movie “the most important contribution to truth-telling of American history that has ever been created.” ([Washington Post]( A researcher looking into Facebook’s role in spreading disinformation alleges she was fired by Harvard’s Kennedy School after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s philanthropy gave $500 million to the university. In a whistleblower disclosure, Joan Donovan said she launched her project in late 2021 based on papers provided by former Facebook employee Frances Haugen, coinciding with the donation from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Donovan said Kennedy School dean Douglas Elmendorf froze hiring and fundraising for the effort and ultimately eliminated her post. She is seeking an investigation by Harvard’s general counsel, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Massachusetts attorney general.
