The nonprofit, called Muso, upgraded local clinics, deployed community health workers, and offered free care. Among the results of two separate trials testing its work are the lowest death rate for children under 5 in sub-Saharan Africa and significantly improved prenatal care. Muso, which now has an annual budget of $20 million, has received millions of dollars from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, MacKenzie Scott, the Open Society Initiative for West Africa, and other large philanthropies.
