Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Online A new nonprofit with links to a Texas billionaire backer of school vouchers is waging a campaign against a major bond issue for schools in Midland, Texas. Move Midland was registered as a tax-exempt organization in September, less than two months before voters will decide on a $1.4 billion bond for the school district. Its leaders have ties to an oil and gas company owned by Tim Dunn, the founder of a private Christian school, and with a think tank of which he is vice chairman. That think tank championed a relatively new requirement that school bond questions be labeled tax increases on the ballot, whether or not they result in higher taxes. Move Midland, a 501(c)(4) âsocial welfare organization,â does not have to disclose its backers. ([Texas Tribune and ProPublica]( As rents and homelessness rise, the District of Columbia is relaunching a program to get legal help for tenants who face eviction and who receive some government housing assistance. Armed with data showing it is less expensive to provide legal aid before a family loses housing than to offer social services after an eviction, a coalition of nonprofits, law firms, and an arm of the court system is taking aim at a city eviction rate that increased 250 percent from January 2022 to January 2023. Legal Aid D.C. estimates that about a third of the eviction cases scheduled for an initial hearing over the next several weeks involve renters on a subsidy, who could lose their assistance if they lose in court.
