Generation X and millennials are less drawn to check-writing hoopla and annual galas. Instead, they gravitate toward âGoFundMe, social media buttons, and direct payments to influencers.â They are also more likely to give away large sums during their lifetimes, as opposed to leaving a legacy, and they apply the same principles to their spending, investments, and philanthropy, often looking for ways to mitigate climate change, racial inequities, and mental-health issues. Less than half of their elders believe these younger donors, who are set to come into about $60 trillion in assets in the next 20 years, will be as effective as the generations that preceded them, according to recent research. The changing mind-set will require charities âto effectively cultivate a generation that wants to be inspired through storytelling and feel an authentic connection with a cause.â ([Town & Country]( The legal battle between two of Paul Newmanâs daughters and the Newmanâs Own Foundation, and a successful bid to avoid a big tax bill, show the peculiar difficulties inherent in managing a large foundation tied to both a family and a business. Benjamin Soskis writes that the foundation sits in the âtreacherousâ place âwhere business and philanthropy intersect,â recounting how the philanthropy narrowly missed having to either divest itself of the Newmanâs Own company or write a big check to the Internal Revenue Service. Further, Soskis writes, the daughtersâ claims â that executives of the foundation wrongly cut the annual amounts they were entitled to give to charity, as specified in Newmanâs will, and that the foundation has neglected some causes that were dear to Newman â illustrate the tension that can exist between the interests of family, heirsâ interpretations of their forebearsâ wishes, and the judgment of a family foundationâs professional staff.
