Founder Yvon Chouinard and his wife, Malinda, and their two grown children are giving all of the company’s voting shares to the new Patagonia Purpose Trust, which is intended to ensure that Patagonia “makes good on its commitment to run a socially responsible business and give away its profits.” The remaining 98 percent of shares will go to the new Holdfast Collective, a 501(c)(4) organization that will allow proceeds to flow to political entities as well as activist groups. The family has already given Holdfast $50 million and plans to add another $100 million this year. The deal has superficial similarities to electronics magnate Barre Seid’s gift of his company to a conservative trust last month, but it is structured differently so that, unlike Seid, the Chouinards will pay taxes on the donation. “Hopefully, this will influence a new form of capitalism that doesn’t end up with a few rich people and a bunch of poor people,” Yvon Chouinard said.
