Nicholas Lemann, former dean of the journalism school at Columbia U., takes note of the shift in public opinion that produced Matthew Bishop and Michael Greenâs â[Philanthrocapitalism: How the Rich Can Save the World]( in 2008, then a decade later, Anand Giridharadasâs â[Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World]( And adding to the skepticism, he notes, are two more recent books worth examining. Paul Vallely, author of â[Philanthropy From Aristotle to Zuckerberg]( questions whether philanthropists have the standing to change society. Emma Saunders-Hastings, author of âPrivate Virtues, Public Vices: Philanthropy and Democratic Equality,â sees âpaternalism anytime philanthropists try to dictate the behavior of their recipients, or otherwise assume that they have a better idea of whatâs in their recipientsâ interests than the recipients do.â Even though such criticisms are crucial, Lemann says, âskeptics of philanthropy tend to have an incomplete sense of the worldâs imperfections.
