GOVERNMENT AND REGULATION [Biden ‘Billionaire’ Tax Proposal Could Spur Changes in How the Wealthiest Give]( By Maria Di Mento and Dan Parks [STORY IMAGE]( The plan would likely bring about more charitable giving, philanthropy experts say, although some tax analysts caution that the plan is still too vague for people to know its impact on donors. OPINION [Ukrainian Media, Facing Physical and Financial Harms, Needs Immediate and Long-Term Support]( By Jeanne Bourgault [STORY IMAGE]( Philanthropy has stepped up its giving to media organizations in Ukraine, but those dollars will go further if they don’t focus solely on the current crisis but also advance the larger goals of global press freedom. NEWS FROM THE CHRONICLE We’re excited to announce the [winners of our inaugural fellowship]( to strengthen local reporting on philanthropy and nonprofits. Journalists from the Boulder (Colo.) This new effort is part of our in-depth collaboration with the [Associated Press]( and the Conversation to enhance public understanding of the nonprofit word, which is supported by a three-year grant from the Lilly Endowment. NONPROFIT NEWS FROM ELSEWHERE With her latest round of gifts, MacKenzie Scott is plunging deeper into international philanthropy. The foreign donations that Scott announced in March are nearly double all of her previous gifts to groups outside the United States, according to a Bloomberg tally. Among the 60 non-U.S. recipients this time were organizations working on public health in India, women’s rights and conservation in Latin America, and biodiversity in the Pacific. Her $15 million grant to the African Population and Health Research Center in Nairobi, Kenya, was its largest ever from an individual. “That kind of unrestricted donation is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will keep us going long term,” said Catherine Kyobutungi, the center’s executive director. “We’ve never seen anything like it.” ([Bloomberg]( With a fortune made in finance, billionaire Nicolas Berggruen is building a space for thinkers to work on the biggest questions of our time and times to come. Six years after introducing the $1 million Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture, the French-born, German-American investor plans to launch a 450-acre campus in Los Angeles affiliated with his think tank. In its 12 years, the nonprofit Berggruen Institute has attracted support from the likes of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, and journalist Fareed Zakaria. Among the institute’s concerns is the revitalization of democracy, but one of its top executives said it aims to foster revolutionary ideas that might not catch on “until long after we’re dead.” One scholar who has benefited from Berggruen’s largess likens him to a modern-day Medici, “a wealthy patron trying to stimulate a ‘philosophical and artistic renaissance or spring for our times.’” ([New York Times]( More About Billionaires - With ‘Stealth Politics,’ Billionaires Make Sure Their Money Talks.
