Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Leaders and staff at the Human Rights Campaign are waiting anxiously for the results of an inquiry into whether the organization’s former president knowingly abetted departed New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s attempts to deflect sexual-harassment allegations. Alphonso David, who was hired to lead the country’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group in 2019 after working as counsel for Cuomo, has said he had no knowledge of incidents cited in the explosive New York attorney general’s report that prompted Cuomo’s resignation. He has also said that he was obliged to hand over documents about an accuser that a Cuomo aide requested from him after he left Cuomo’s office. Some HRC employees are skeptical that David was ignorant of issues that had been widely covered in the press. But they also acknowledge that David, who is Black, has helped the organization widen its scope to better represent gay people of color and trans people, and “though they seek accountability, they want to make sure Mr. David is not scapegoated for a powerful white man’s transgressions.” The investigation is expected to take a month. ([New York Times]( Billions of dollars held by private entities, including charities and institutional endowments, are being overseen by a self-policing accounting industry that rarely blows the whistle on incompetence or bad behavior in its ranks. Accounting firms regularly audit one another, and their findings do not have to be disclosed publicly. Some experts say they pull their punches, lest critical assessments lose them customers. Of 659 firms that reported their results publicly — about 3 percent of the 24,000 doing peer reviews — a Wall Street Journal analysis found that “91 percent got the highest ‘pass’ grade and only 4 percent the worst ‘fail’ score on the three-grade scale.” Almost all of the 100 biggest firms got a “pass” score. Meanwhile, more than one-fourth of the audits reviewed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants last year “fell short of professional standards.” In the past several years, regulators and courts have said audits have failed to catch errors and evidence of fraud at a now-bankrupt university in California and some private investment funds.
