([New York Times]( Donors have used the privacy protections of donor-advised funds to anonymously give millions to a charity launched by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, thwarting state disclosure requirements. Since it started in 2014, the Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles has raised more than $60 million from corporations, philanthropies, and individuals. Garcetti has solicited at least some of those gifts, and California law requires that donations of $5,000 or more that are given on behalf of a politician be publicly disclosed. But at least $3.8 million in gifts have gone through donor-advised funds, leaving no trail back to their original source. Considering that some donors could be doing business with the state or dealing with state regulators, ethics watchdogs say disclosure is key. Its stores in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont discarded 13 million pounds of waste in 2020. Still, Goodwill is wary of discouraging donations so it is "doing a bit of a media tour" to educate the public about what not to drop off.
