Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Leaders of more than 30 companies, including Merck and IBM, are backing a new nonprofit that aims to create 1 million corporate jobs for Black Americans in the next decade. OneTen will recruit nonprofits, community colleges, and organizations that award credentials to train prospects and help them thrive in the corporate world, and chief executives have pledged to hire them. Ginni Rometty, an IBM executive who co-founded OneTen, said companies will re-examine whether some of the jobs for which they demand a four-year degree could be done just as well by people with the right skills but without that diploma. Ken Frazier, CEO of Merck and another OneTen founder, said 80 percent of Black Americans lack a four-year degree. ([Wall Street Journal]( â subscription) The Nature Conservancy has been trading in carbon offsets by offering big polluters credits for saving trees â many of which were not endangered in the first place. For example, the environmental nonprofit has helped the likes of JPMorgan Chase, Walt Disney, and BlackRock to offset their carbon emissions by paying to preserve trees in Pennsylvania and New York State that "were already part of well-preserved forests." These offsets, part of a booming market for emissions credits, help ease the pressure on companies to reduce their carbon footprints. The Nature Conservancy said its offsets are guided by a peer-reviewed methodology and its individual credit trades are subject to third-party audits.
