Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Memphis's largest health-care system, the nonprofit Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, almost never gave discounts to poor people who struggled to pay their hospital bills. Of the 977,000-plus patients with bills at least 30 days past due, from whom the hospital has collected more than $169 million since 2014, it has offered discounts to only 1 percent. Le Bonheur also used to offer commissions to its bill collectors who took in more than $30,000 monthly for the hospital and even sued its own employees for nonpayment. Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee and has been looking into nonprofit health-care practices, said Le Bonheur's record violates the spirit of laws granting health-care institutions tax-exempt status in exchange for charity care. Grassley called for tighter regulation of nonprofit health-care companies. ([ProPublica and MLK50: Justice Through Journalism]( Elections officials in swing states say money from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative this year helped avoid an election-season debacle. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, gave $400 million to nonprofits, almost all to the Center for Tech and Civic Life, which then handed out grants to state and local officials. The money paid for extra people and equipment to deal with a crush of mail-in ballots and to speed up the counting process. Experts say the funds were needed this year, when Congress set aside only $400 million in March for elections, but that as a rule the United States should not be funding its elections with private money.
