If philanthropists are genuinely committed to anti-racism, improving public health, and ensuring justice for all, helping formerly incarcerated people integrate successfully into communities is an excellent place to start.

Nonprofit News from Elsewhere
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is joining with 16 major drug makers to ensure treatments and a vaccine for the coronavirus can be quickly and fairly distributed around the world. In announcing the effort, Bill Gates said nearly half the world's people live in poorer countries that could afford to vaccinate only about 14 percent of their populations. The pharmaceutical companies, which include giants AstraZeneca, Bayer, Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Gilead, GSK, Novartis, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson, signed on to a commitment to "do everything in our power to make sure they reach everyone who needs them, no matter where they live or what they can pay," though their video communique offered no specifics. Hundreds of artists have signed an open letter urging four major museums to reinstate an exhibit of Philip Guston's work, whose later paintings show depictions of Ku Klux Klan figures. Officials at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, said they delayed the show for four years to provide greater context for the pieces, considering the current attention to matters of race and racism. But the signers of the letter, which was spearheaded by some of America's greatest living artists, accuse the institutions of fearing controversy and insulting their audience. A catalog for the show, which "discusses Gustonâs engagement with racism and anti-Semitism in depth," had already been printed. ([New York Times](

Free Online Briefing: Will the Economic Crisis Force a Philanthropic Reset?
There's still time! Join Us Today â Our country's interconnected crises â the pandemic, systemic racism, and a faltering economy â provide an opportunity for the philanthropic world to create a more equitable and effective version of itself. But where do we begin?
In her â[Reimagining Philanthropy]( series for the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Stanford University philanthropy expert Lucy Bernholz points out that measures of charitable giving and nonprofit vitality have declined during the pandemic even as thousands of people take to the streets, deliver aid to neighbors, and create online communities of care. âWhile we search for ways to reconstruct our shattered economy into something better,â says Bernholz, âwe also need to reflect on how best to rebuild the nonprofit world and not simply recreate the âold normal.ââ
Join us on October 1 at 2 p.m. Eastern for the first of two briefings drawn from Bernholzâs series. In this one-hour session, we will zero in on questions triggered by the [economic crisis]( such as:
- How can we go beyond short-term fixes to shore up nonprofits, such as increasing payout rates and issuing social bonds?
- Do we need to reconsider philanthropic structures themselves, including tax privileges and laws that have allowed these institutions to thrive in an inequitable system?
Weâll explore these and other questions in a session that should appeal to all who think and care about the future of philanthropy.
Individual Chronicle subscribers are automatically pre-registered. Reminder emails will be sent out in advance; just click on the link to join.

Cultivate Midlevel Donors
[Join Our Webinar]( Week]( â Midlevel donors bring in a hefty share of annual revenue at many nonprofits. Plus, theyâre loyal: 75 percent keep giving year after year, research shows. Yet these key supporters often get overlooked because their giving doesnât fit into major gifts or direct-response fundraising.
How can your nonprofit attract midlevel donors and hold onto them for the long haul â despite the economic and health crises?
Join us for a 75-minute webinar to learn from two senior fundraisers who oversee successful midlevel giving programs. Theyâll share insights into whatâs working now to keep these important supporters connected to your work. And even if you donât have a strong midlevel program, theyâll offer simple steps you can take right away to nurture these donors and boost giving. Plus, youâll get real-world examples of donor communications and fundraising appeals that hit the mark with those who make midlevel contributions.
[Register now]( to get a special early-bird discount on this session, which airs Thursday, October 8, at 2 p.m. Eastern. Can't make it then? Watch it on demand at your convenience.
