Nonprofit News From Elsewhere
Liberal and conservative donors are pouring millions into the fight over mail-in voting and election procedures this year. On the left, organizations including the Open Society and Arabella Advisors, founded by a Clinton administration alumnus, are directly and indirectly funding efforts to strike down restrictive voting laws, help voters cast ballots by mail, drive up turnout, and forestall Election Day chaos or violence. On the right, the nonprofit Donors Trust and others are waging court fights to defend state voting laws that critics call voter suppression. Both sides combined will likely spend more than $100 million, but disclosure deadlines and rules mean most donors will remain anonymous, at least until after the election. ([Associated Press](

Many nonprofits that have served as safety nets for their communities are buckling under the pandemic-related economic crash. Plunging donations, lost subsidies from strapped local governments, and canceled events and contracts have destroyed many groups' budgets as their spending climbs on items such as personal protective gear and computers to facilitate tele-work and virtual services. The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago has closed three of its 17 branches, and in Baltimore the nonprofit Sheppard Pratt Health System, which provides mental health and addiction services, has furloughed hundreds of employees even as overdoses spike during the pandemic.
