Nonprofit News From Elsewhere
A group of tech philanthropists is prodding governments to fund efforts to prevent future pandemics. The Pandemic Action Network has raised only $1.5 million so far, but its backers include the Gates Foundation and Schmidt Futures. The fledgling organization wants to help shape policy and could, for instance, push governments to fund development of vaccines and treatments or lobby for bulking up the U.S. strategic national stockpile. Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitzâs Open Philanthropy Project is also putting money into pandemic preparedness, including the possibility of an âengineeredâ outbreak. ([Vox](

Some Republicans and Democrats in Congress are working with philanthropist chef Jose Andres to build a national anti-hunger response led by FEMA. The Feed Act would bring federal funds and national reach to nonprofit efforts already underway in some cities, where idled restaurant kitchens are making meals to feed the hungry. Andres compared the plan, which would also incorporate farmers and other food producers, to the Depression-era Works Progress Administration. Sponsors want to include the measure in the next Covid-19 relief package. ([Washington Post](
