Nonprofit News From Elsewhere
Legal troubles have cost the National Rifle Association about $100 million since 2018, the organizationâs chief executive told a January Board of Directors meeting. Wayne LaPierre, whose own lavish spending has caused dissension in the NRA, said real costs to the group had been about $80 million, with the rest coming in the form of lost revenue. The NRA is being investigated by the attorneys general of New York and Washington, D.C., and is locked in litigation with its former public relations firm, Ackerman McQueen. An April court filing said the group had paid outside counsel over $54 million in the past two years. ([NPR](
Researchers around the world are working on coronavirus-related projects thanks to $12 million in fast-grant money set up by tech founders and an economist. Fast Grants, funded by Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison, Y Combinator founder Paul Graham, and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, allow scientists to apply for funds in about 30 minutes and receive an answer within two days, as opposed to the typical monthslong process. Its initial grants went to research on a vaccine, testing, and spread and infection rates, among other efforts. Economist Tyler Cowen of George Mason University had final say on the applications. The money is now depleted, but Fast Grantâs directors are raising money for another round. ([Vox](
