Nonprofit News From Elsewhere
The coronavirus pandemic could leave tech billionaires with even more power once it passes. The huge sums that some are giving to research and relief could make elected officials more reluctant to scrutinize their businesses or address the imbalances in our economy and society that helped billionaires amass their fortunes, say philanthropy critics. But other donors and nonprofit experts say federal failures make it critical for billionaire donors to step in fast with big dollars. However, even that will be not enough. âPhilanthropy is taking on a greater portion of the responsibility for response than anyone expected,â Dustin Moskovitz, the philanthropist who is a co-founder of Facebook told Recode. âUnfortunately, I think itâs clear to anyone closely following the situation today that philanthropy simply canât solve this crisis on its own.â ([Vox](

Seventy percent of the 650 that answered so far have avoided laying off staff, but most have put freelancersâ contracts on hold, paused capital projects, and canceled international exhibitions. The organization has had to cancel its large and lucrative annual gathering as well as other fundraising events. Remaining staff members, including chief executive Wayne LaPierre, whose compensation is in the millions, will reportedly take pay cuts.
