An Ohio research and development nonprofit is sending machines to hospitals in New York and Washington state that will decontaminate up to 80,000 N95 masks a day. Developed by the Battelle Memorial Institute, the device uses vaporized hydrogen peroxide in an airtight shipping container. Some hospitals in New York use microwave-size decontamination chambers that can handle only three masks a minute, and at least one other hospital sends 300 masks at a time to Oregon for decontamination in a process that takes several days. With New York health-care workers critically short of protective masks, one hospital official called the machines a potential âgame changer.â ([Newsday](
The new coronavirus relief package is not suited to many nonprofits. Instead, it treats charities much like small businesses, offering forgivable loans that many nonprofits lack the discretionary funds to repay and that rely on a credit score â the executive directorâs? â to secure. Grants in the package, up to $10,000, are too small to help nonprofits with a decent roster of programs and a sizable payroll.
