Nonprofit News From Elsewhere
The coronavirus pandemic will likely spell the end for many nonprofits. Given that so many cultural and social-service groups have almost no reserves, their leaders will have to be hard-nosed in deciding to lay off staff or not to pay bills, and ultimately many will have to plan for a âsensible dissolution.â To stem the carnage, lawmakers must treat nonprofits, which amount to a $200 billion industry and often employ the most vulnerable people, as essential as small businesses, and donors must loosen the purse strings now. The Infectious Disease Research Institute will give about 100 subjects an infusion of immune cells in a treatment similar to that used for leukemia and myeloma patients. The institute received funding from Celularity, a company in New Jersey that researches cellular therapy. The research instituteâs chief executive said if the trials go well, the therapy could be on the market âmuch earlierâ than a coronavirus vaccine. ([Seattle King 5](
