Nonprofit News From Elsewhere
Harvard University is preparing to send about $50 million to the Internal Revenue Service as a new tax on university endowments takes effect. The 1.4 percent levy, part of the 2017 federal tax overhaul, affects institutions with more than 500 students whose endowments amount to at least $500,000 per student. That adds up to about 40 institutions, including Yale and Princeton universities, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Amherst College. At $41 billion, Harvardâs is the largest university investment fund in the world. Higher-education lobbies have fought hard against the tax, which some institutions fear will lead to other taxes on their funds. The IRS is indeed eyeing the interest colleges make on student loans and other sources of income. ([Boston Globe](
Former and current top officials at California State University San Marcos spent huge sums on travel, dining, and limousine rides, some of it funded by the schoolâs nonprofit arm. The expenses included $762 a night for a hotel in Spain and $9,100 for chauffeured rides over nine months. The nonprofit, CSUSM Corporation, paid for expensive dinners and high-end alcohol, which a university spokeswoman said was part of the charityâs mission to promote the university. The campusâs new president and the university systemâs chancellor have each announced audits of the spending. ([Los Angeles Times](
