Nonprofit News From Elsewhere Online Before Florida A&M University announced a spurious $237 million gift in May, which quickly fell apart, officials received a warning from the donorâs financial adviser about its value. Raymond James Financial Services told college administrators that it would no longer stand by a valuation of stocks that Texas hemp farmer Gregory Gerami planned to donate, which Gerami later said was arrived at via an âinternal reportâ without third-party verification. After the gift announcement, FAMU officials also received emails from people familiar with Gerami, including an academic gift officer who warned that Gerami had made similar promises to five other colleges that fell through. Another message came from a pastor who had known Gerami since he was a child and said the would-be donorâs life was âone complete fabricated lie.â FAMU has hired a law firm to investigate what led to the debacle. A new law applies cash bail to 30 additional crimes, âincluding 18 that are always or often misdemeanors, including failure to appear in court for a traffic citation.â It also requires people and organizations that post bail more than three times annually to go through a lengthy process to meet the requirements to become bail bond companies.
